Secret Victoria
|
The Citadel
London's most visible underground military citadel is located just behind the Admiralty building on Horse Guards Parade. Comprising a huge concrete bunker, it is now covered in ivy to allow it to blend a bit more discretely into the area. |
MI5
The service has a national headquarters at Thames House on Millbank. Within the civil service community the service is colloquially known as Box 500 (after its official wartime address of PO Box 500). |
MI6
The Secret Intelligence Service's started life as the Foreign Section of the Secret Service at 64 Victoria Street in 1909. They occupied 54 Broadway until 1966, with the head of the organisation - 'C' - using the interconnecting building at 21 Queen Anne's Gate. MI6 completed their move over the river in 1996, by vacating 60 Vauxhall Bridge Road, which was then redeveloped. |
Q-Whitehall
The underground network of tunnels known as Q-Whitehall is accessed from a very discrete doorway on Craig's Court. In Bond-esque manner, an anonymous looking door leads down many levels to connect with the security tunnels and bunkers below. |
Pindar
The most important military underground citadel in central London-and arguably in Britain-is Pindar, a bunker built beneath the Ministry of Defence on Whitehall. Its construction, which took ten years and reportedly cost £126.3 million, finally came to a conclusion in 1994. The name Pindar is taken from the ancient Greek poet, whose house alone was left standing after his city was razed. |
The Cabinet War-rooms
The section of the War Rooms open to the public is in fact only a portion of a much larger underground facility. They originally covered three acres (1.2 hectares) and housed a staff of up to 528 people, with facilities including a canteen, hospital, shooting range and dormitories. |
